  1. : The tooth and body of the belt is made up of a specially compounded rubber for high shear strength and resistance to oil and heat. While polychloroprene is the polymer used in the standard heat resistant belts, HSN is used in belts where higher temperature resistant properties are called for.
  2. : The tensile cords are made of high modulus low stretch fibre glass.
  3. : The backing or the overcord of the belt is again a specially compounded rubber for high resistance to oil, heat and abrasion. The polymer employed is polychloroprene or HSN.
  4. : The tooth facing is made up of a specially woven polyamide fabric for high wear resistance and low co-efficient of friction.


Though the majority of the engine manufacturers have standardised on a tooth pitch of 3/8th inch (9.525 mm) for the drive system belt and pulleys (on the camshaft, crankshaft and ancilliaries), there are few who have adopted an 8 mm pitch (with curvilinear tooth profile). Whilst the three basic tooth profiles are the trapezoidal, the curvilinear and the modified curvilinear profiles, there are a number of variations evolved by belt manufacturers with a view to improve performance and reduce noise levels as well as to offer equivalents to other manufacturers belts.
